Part 1: Dealing with our personal struggles
We face many challenges in the spiritual process. Modern life brought many facilities that can be used to improve our spiritual practice, such as the possibility of connecting with devotees from all over the world and easily traveling to join festivals and visit the holy places. At the same time, however, we are bombarded with distractions and have to navigate a minefield of challenges that may look almost unsurpassable.
From all challenges, the ones that come from the inside are often the most formidable. Most of us faced neglect, betrayal and even violence at different points of our life and this leaves scars that can be difficult to surpass. When we come to Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, we get the tools to surpass this conditioned nature, in the form of spiritual practice, association with devotees and philosophical introspection. However, this by itself may not automatically solve all the internal issues we have, and if we get into the habit of simply suppressing all desires and emotions, these issues can become more acute and become harder to deal with later on.
The key is to not deny our internal struggles nor try to bury them under forced asceticism, but to face them honestly as part of our process of spiritual growth. When we learn to have patience with ourselves and find the right tools to deal with our internal issues, we can finally remove these obstacles and let the spiritual process work its magic.
