In his previous life, Narada Muni was a simple boy, the son of a maidservant. He became self-realized by associating with a group of pure devotees and hearing about devotional service from them.
Incident of Narada Muni performing funeral ceremony of His mother is very similar to what Adi Shankaracharya did. Śrīla Prabhupāda says in one lecture 17/5/76, Honolulu -:
"And Śaṅkarācārya, he also took sannyāsa at the age of eight years. Śaṅkarācārya was exterminated from the, extricated from the brāhmaṇa society. Therefore he took sannyāsa, gave up the whole society, friendship and love, so-called, at the age of eight years. He was born of a widow; therefore he was not accepted in the society. So when his mother died, he called for the neighbors to help him for the funeral ceremony. Nobody came to help him, because he was considered a bastard. In the society, say one thousand—how long?—one thousand five hundred years ago, was very, very strict. So he set fire in his house - house means cottage - and went away. So the funeral ceremony was performed along with the burning of the house."
It interesting to see how elevated devotees if the lord have similar incidents in life although living in different times. Similar point is also found in life of Tulsi das n Sri Bilvamangala Thakura. How they both left material Life is very similar just former was attached to wife n latter to prostitute. Hare Kṛṣṇa. All Glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda
