Hare Krishna. Srila Prabhupada left his wife also... so it is a bonafide option at one point... it is also a kind of a divorce

This is Vanaprasta; when one leaves the family to dedicate oneself exclusively to the service of the Lord. It's different from divorce.

Without the wife's consent it is a divorce. Vanaprastha is an ashram and done with wife's blessings. Srila Prabhupada abandoned his wife and took sannyasa.

No, traditionally, the man would just disappear without telling anyone. Asking for the consent of the wife is a modern adaptation. I don't have information of it being done before our movement.

The point is not the wife agreeing or not, but one not going back into family life, be with the wife or another, after renouncing.

Prabhupada said, if your wife is a devotee, there is no need for separation or leaving her... no need for sannyasa
