There are four verses in the Bhagavad-gītā that describe the essence of the whole book. The four verses appear in the 10th chapter:
“I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from Me. The wise who perfectly know this engage in My devotional service and worship Me with all their hearts.
The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.
To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me.
To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.”
The reason these four verses are considered the essence of the Gītā is that they summarize the whole process of devotional service: When we acquire knowledge of Kṛṣṇa, this knowledge awakens our dormant devotion for Him. This devotion leads us to serve Kṛṣṇa and associate with other devotees, helping us to advance further. Seeing this sincerity, Kṛṣṇa reciprocates from within the heart, clearing the material ignorance and removing whatever is still preventing us from attaining Him.
Let’s dive deeper:
Kṛṣṇa is suhṛdaṁ sarva-bhūtānām, the well-wishing friend of all living entities. What happens when we hear that our dear friend is the master of the entire universe? Our attraction to Him grows even more.
As long as we see the universe as separated from Kṛṣṇa, it may distract us from the ultimate goal, but when we finally see it in the correct perspective, as the energy of Kṛṣṇa that should be engaged in His service, our devotional actions and the vision of the cosmos itself help us to remain absorbed in thought of Kṛṣṇa. That is the power of the transcendental knowledge given to us in the Gītā.
Kṛṣṇa can be understood only by devotional service. That’s the reason Prabhupāda insists in the introduction of the Gītā that one has to accept Kṛṣṇa as the Supreme Personality of Godhead to understand the book. Without at least an embryonic form of bhakti, Kṛṣṇa cannot be understood at all. When we approach the Gītā in the correct spirit, however, Kṛṣṇa gradually reveals Himself. Faith awakens in the heart, giving us confidence that we are on the right path. By continuing, doubts are gradually clarified, both from without, through the association with devotees, and from within, from the Supersoul, just as the sun rising in the morning gradually clears out all darkness. When the process is complete, the sun of Kṛṣṇa shines bright in the form of love of Godhead. This love of Godhead leads to the spontaneous attraction that is described in text 10.9: “The thoughts of My pure devotees dwell in Me, their lives are fully devoted to My service, and they derive great satisfaction and bliss from always enlightening one another and conversing about Me.”
Devotional service is thus a reciprocal relation. When Kṛṣṇa says that we should surrender to Him, this is not a simple demand; this includes all these instructions that describe how He reciprocates. Kṛṣṇa gives us knowledge so we can gradually remember our eternal relationship with Him, and as we approach Him, He further illuminates our hearts, deepening our realization and eliminating all obstacles. This is made clear in the last two verses of the sequence:
“To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. To show them special mercy, I, dwelling in their hearts, destroy with the shining lamp of knowledge the darkness born of ignorance.”
The soul is not part of the material world. Although factual, the material contamination is external to the soul. Just as darkness is the absence of light, and cold is the absence of heat, material ignorance is the absence of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. As we revive our original nature of service to Kṛṣṇa and He becomes present in our lives, all ignorance is cleared, including all bad habits. Freed from this contamination, we see ourselves as what we are, eternal souls who are eternal servants of Kṛṣṇa. Engaged in His devotional service, our love for Him further develops, until we come to the point of personally serving Him in His eternal abode.
In text 10.10, Prabhupāda gives us one of the most reassuring and instructive sentences of the whole book:
“A person may have a bona fide spiritual master and may be attached to a spiritual organization, but if he is still not intelligent enough to make progress, then Kṛṣṇa from within gives him instructions so that he may ultimately come to Him without difficulty. The qualification is that a person always engage himself in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and with love and devotion render all kinds of services. He should perform some sort of work for Kṛṣṇa, and that work should be with love. If a devotee is not intelligent enough to make progress on the path of self-realization but is sincere and devoted to the activities of devotional service, the Lord gives him a chance to make progress and ultimately attain to Him.”
We may study the Bhagavad-gītā and not remember much at the end, or we may read and not understand at all. On top of that, we may do everything right, accepting a spiritual master, associating with devotees and so on, and still feel we are going nowhere. Regardless of these impressions being true or not, the main point remains: when we sincerely serve Kṛṣṇa, He becomes present in our lives, and gradually gives us the knowledge by which we can advance. That’s why Prabhupāda mentions that “the sincere devotee engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness cannot be without knowledge.” Even if a devotee has no facilities for deep philosophical study, still he or she gets spiritual realization from the heart, and this realization grows as we advance. This doesn’t mean we should not seriously study the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and try to understand Kṛṣṇa, but it guarantees that even if everything else fails, success is still assured, for Kṛṣṇa Himself can give us the knowledge we need to come to Him.
What is this intelligence given by Kṛṣṇa? In text 10.10, he uses the word buddhi-yoga (dadāmi buddhi-yogaṁ taṁ). Buddhi-yoga means the transcendental understanding He personally gives to those who serve Him with love.
Buddhi-yoga is transcendental intelligence, free from attachment to the fruits of action and mental speculation. It is pure, and that’s why it has the power to bring us to Kṛṣṇa. By serving Kṛṣṇa, we obtain this special type of intelligence (buddhi-yoga), that leads us to pure love of Godhead, on the platform of pure bhakti.
Prabhupāda explains this delicate balance of buddhi-yoga being at the same time a product of Kṛṣṇa’s mercy due to a devotee’s sincerity and the means for obtaining Him in his purport:
“Buddhi-yoga itself is action in Kṛṣṇa consciousness; that is the highest intelligence. Buddhi means intelligence, and yoga means mystic activities or mystic elevation. When one tries to go back home, back to Godhead, and takes fully to Kṛṣṇa consciousness in devotional service, his action is called buddhi-yoga. In other words, buddhi-yoga is the process by which one gets out of the entanglement of this material world.”
Intellectual capacity is a material asset. It can help us to study the scriptures and thus better understand the process, but this is not the main factor. The main factor is our sincerity in doing some service to Kṛṣṇa with love. Everyone has got some special ability by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. One may be good with his hands, another may have musical ability, and another may be good with words, or in dealing with people. Another may be good at cooking or cleaning; another may have talent for business or construction. One may like to do manual labor, while another may prefer to sit in front of a computer. There are unlimited possibilities. The point is that all these talents and abilities come from Kṛṣṇa, and when we come to use them for Kṛṣṇa, that’s the perfection of life. It’s not about the size or importance of the activity itself, but the loving attitude with which it is performed. Kṛṣṇa is already the owner of everything. He is not impressed by great presentations; what He wants is simply our love, and devotional service is the process to develop and express this love.
