CHAPTER FOUR:
Transcendental Knowledge
(jñāna-karma-sannyāsa-yoga)

The fourth chapter describes the process of sanātana-yoga, the eternal activities of the soul in relationship with Kṛṣṇa. In other words, it describes the process of obtaining transcendental knowledge by which one understands both the eternal position of the soul and the transcendental nature of Kṛṣṇa. This knowledge reveals our eternal position of service, destroying in the process all the results of our accumulated karma.

The process of buddhi-yoga that Kṛṣṇa described summarily in the second chapter is the combination of devotional service and transcendental knowledge. Kṛṣṇa described the basic process of action in Kṛṣṇa consciousness in chapter three, and now He will explain the process of developing transcendental knowledge. This combination will be further deepened in chapter five.

Kṛṣṇa starts the fourth chapter by establishing the authority of this knowledge and the process for obtaining it. The science of the Bhagavad-gītā is transmitted through disciplic succession. When the chain breaks, Kṛṣṇa personally descends to reestablish it. Just studying the Gītā as an ordinary book, therefore, is not enough. We need to receive the correct conclusions of the book and the proper spiritual process through the system of paramparā, the eternal system for the transmission of unalloyed transcendental knowledge inaugurated by the Lord Himself.

The Vedas prescribe different types of sacrifice according to one’s disposition. Everyone should perform sacrifice, but the consciousness determines the result. Sacrifices performed without knowledge of our relationship with Kṛṣṇa become material, while sacrifices performed in devotional service are fully spiritual. Spiritual understanding also has two divisions: understanding of our eternal position as souls, and understanding of Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Impersonalists realize their spiritual position, but they don’t come to the platform of service to Kṛṣṇa; their realization is thus incomplete. By following the teachings of the Bhagavad-gītā, however, we can understand both, and attain true spiritual realization.
