There are aspects of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s teachings that many modern readers find difficult to understand. Among them are his statements about women, especially his repeated assertion that women are generally less intelligent than men, more lustful, less trustworthy, etc. For some readers, such statements are troubling. For others, they appear to conflict with the deep respect, affection, and spiritual opportunity that Śrīla Prabhupāda personally extended to his female disciples. Others simply try to avoid the discussion altogether, either by dismissing the statements as irrelevant or by repeating them without careful thought. Some become apologetic, treating it as a public relations issue.
In this book, we try to avoid all these reactions. Rather, the purpose is to examine what Śrīla Prabhupāda actually said, how he used such statements, what scriptural and social assumptions stood behind them, and how they fit into the larger framework of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
